Dhaka Bureau: Former BNP leader Barrister Nazmul Huda’s party ‘Trinamool BNP’ is getting registration with the Election Commission (EC) as a political party. In light of the order of the High Court, the Election Commission is going to give this registration, said Election Commissioner Md. Alamgir.
He gave this information while talking to reporters in his room at Agargaon election building in the capital on Thursday (February 9). Earlier, the party applied to the Election Commission several times but was left out of the scrutiny. The EC’s new party registration process is now underway ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections. It will take a few more months to complete this process, said the officials of the concerned branch of the EC Secretariat.
On December 17, 2022, a three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Faiz Siddiqui ordered the Election Commission to register Trinamool BNP.
Election Commissioner in response to a question. Alamgir said that the decision came from the Appellate Division. EC has been instructed to register Trinamool BNP. So the EC is bound. EC has no chance to go beyond this. He also said that this group will be registered as soon as possible in the context of the court verdict.
In response to the question whether registration of this party will conflict with BNP or not, Alamgir said, EC has nothing to say here. The decision came from the Supreme Court. The court has also determined their symbols. Their symbol will be ‘golden scale’. There is no opportunity to see the account of the field after the order of the court.
He said that EC has the power to verify and give registration. On the other hand, the EC is bound to obey the court’s order. There is no need to verify here after the order of the court. The court has taken the decision after considering the whole matter.
Since the introduction of the political party registration system in the country in 2008, 44 parties have been registered so far. However, the registration of five of these parties has been canceled due to failure to comply with the court order and Election Commission (EC) conditions. Four of them were canceled during the KM Nurul Huda Commission. Apart from this, the registration of Freedom Party was canceled after one year due to failure to submit the permanent constitution after getting the registration.
Earlier, 76 political parties had applied for registration during the KM Nurul Huda Commission. None of these groups received EC’s final consideration of registration. Challenging the Election Commission’s decision, among the parties Nationalist Democratic Movement-NDM and Bangladesh Congress got registration on the orders of the High Court. As per the court order, NDMK was registered by the Election Commission on January 30, 2019. Bangladesh Congress received EC registration on May 9, 2019.
