Dhaka Bureau: The date of submission of the investigation report in the murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Rooney has been delayed for the 97th time. The court asked the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to submit the investigation report by May 22.
If the investigating officer of the case, RAB Additional Superintendent Khandkar Shafiqul Alam, failed to submit the report, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Rashidul Alam gave this order.
RAB took March 5 as the 96th date to submit the investigation report for this case. On that day, the court ordered the parties to submit the report by today.
There are eight accused, including Rooney’s friend Tanveer Rahman, in the discussed murder case. The other accused are home security guards Enam Ahmed alias Humayun Kabir, Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Mia, Mintu alias Bargira Mintu alias Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan Arun, Palash Rudra Pal, and Abu Saeed.
Each of the accused has been remanded several times, but none of them has given a confessional statement.
On the night of February 11, 2012, Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Machranga Television, and Mehrun Rooney, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in their rented house in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar. Their mutilated bodies were recovered early the next morning.
After that, Rooney’s brother Nausher Alam Roman filed a murder case at the Sherebangla Nagar police station in the capital. First, the investigating officer in the case was an SI from that police station. After four days, the investigation of this sensational murder case was handed over to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB).
After more than two months of investigation, DB failed to solve the mystery. Later, on the order of the High Court, the investigation of the murder case was handed over to the RAB on April 18 of the same year. Although a long time has passed since then, the agency has not yet submitted the investigation report for the case.
