Dhaka Bureau: The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) of the Police has arrested a fugitive accused of violating a Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) warrant, Emdadul Haque alias Emdad Ullah. He was arrested on Thursday (March 9) in the Circuit House area of Feni Sadar. He had been running away from home and abroad for 16 years.
ATU Superintendent of Police (Media and Awareness) Mohammad Aslam Khan said that Emdadul Haque and his 12 accomplices planned to detonate bombs in Barisal city. In 2007, a case was filed against them in Barisal’s Kotwali police station for the crime of indulging in criminal conspiracy against the government by collecting explosives, undermining the country’s sovereignty, and disrupting state security. The case is pending in court.
The other accused are currently on bail. ATU Assistant Superintendent of Police Wahida Parveen said Emdadul went into hiding after filing the case. He went to Saudi Arabia on an Umrah visa and stayed from 2010 to 2014. He returned to the country in 2014 after being jailed for an illegal stay and started fleeing to different places. He was involved in spreading militancy and anti-state criminal activities by teaching and acting as an imam in local madrasas.
