Dhaka Bureau: Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) vice president Afroza Haque has been elected unopposed in the reserved women’s seat vacated by BNP’s Rumin Farhana. She is the wife of party president Hasanul Haque Inu.
Election Returning Officer Abdul Baten announced this on Monday (March 6) afternoon.
Abdul Baten said, the last time for withdrawal of candidature was till 4 pm. Afroza Haque did not withdraw his candidacy as a single candidate during this period. So he was elected unopposed. Now the file will be sent to the EC Secretary’s office. After that, the gazette will be published.
After the recent resignation of seven members of parliament of the BNP, the by-elections for six of the vacant seats were held on February 1. Among them, the Awami League won three seats; Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad), a partner of the ruling coalition, won one seat; Jatiya Party won one; and an independent candidate won one seat. BNP’s reserved seat (50th) MP Rumin Farhana resigned at the same time, and the reserved (50th) seat for women in the parliament became vacant. This time, with the support of the Awami League, it was taken over by Jasdar.
The Awami League got the seat reserved under the proportional representation system, but the seat was given to the 14-party alliance. As a result, Jasad got this seat. Jas has three MPs in the 11th Parliament. With this, it is now up to four.
Afroza Haque was born on October 5, 1951, in Nawabganj, Dhaka. Later, while studying at Eden College, he joined the East Pakistan Chhatra League. In 1969, she was elected to the post of social service secretary in the parliamentary elections. In 1975, he married fellow soldier Hasanul Haque Inu. He became a member of Jasdar in 1998.
