Dhaka Bureau: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a loan of USD 4.5 billion for Bangladesh. This loan was approved at the meeting of the IMF Executive Board held on Monday night (January 30), Bangladesh time.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal confirmed this to the media. He expressed his gratitude to the organization for approving the loan.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the IMF will lend 4.5 billion dollars to Bangladesh in seven installments at 2.2 percent interest. Of this, the first installment of $352.35 million may be released in February. The last installment of this loan will be given in 2026.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, “We are definitely grateful to the IMF for this.” The ability of the Bangladeshi economy has been revealed through the IMF’s approval of this loan.
On July 24, 2022, the Bangladesh government sent a letter to the IMF asking for a loan. In addition, on October 12 of that year, Governor Abdur Rauf Talukdar announced the loan assistance of 4.5 billion dollars at the World Bank-IMF annual conference in Washington. At the end of October, a delegation led by Rahul Anand, head of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific region, arrived in Dhaka for a two-week visit. They hold regular meetings with various government departments, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders. At that time, the government also said that there was a preliminary agreement with the IMF regarding the loan.
