Chandpur Correspondent: Miscreants set fire to the house of Awami League presidium member and former minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya in Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur.

The incident happened on Saturday (November 16) at around 8 o’clock in the two buildings of a house in Mohanpur of Matlab North Upazila. After receiving the information, the fire service went to the spot and brought the fire under control. The army, police, and upazila administration reached the spot to see the situation at night.

On Sunday (November 17), Matlab North Incharge Inspector Nurul Karim of Fire Service and Civil Defense said, “We received information about the fire last night. Maya Chowdhury’s house was set on fire on the ground floor of two three-story buildings. Went to the spot and brought the fire under control.

Officer-in-Charge (OC Investigation) of Matlab North Police Station Pradeep said, after receiving the news at night, immediately inform the higher authorities. On the instructions of our SP sir, we went to the spot under the leadership of the in-charge sir of the joint forces. After bringing the fire under control, we are trying to gather information. Legal action will be taken in this regard.

Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Matalab Circle) Khairul Kabir Chowdhury said we received reports of vandalism and arson at the house of former MP Maya Chowdhury. Then we quickly went to the spot with the army, police, and fire service.

He also said that the ground floors of two houses were vandalized and set on fire. However, the fire service was able to control the fire quickly. Due to this, the fire was confined to the ground floor. We are gathering information about who is involved in this incident.

Former General Secretary of Matlab Uttar Upazila BNP Alamgir Hossain Sarkar said we consider this a despicable incident. We do not support it one iota. We never do politics of violence. We do not condone the politics of violence. But I believe if anyone in BNP had thought about violence, vandalism, and arson, they could have done it immediately after August 5.

It should be noted that the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the uprising of the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5. Since then, Maya Chowdhury has been in hiding. It is also known that there are several cases against him in Chandpur, Narayanganj Dhaka. Although his house in Matlab Dakshin Upazila was set on fire on August 5, his house in Matlab North Upazila was undamaged.
