The Crime Desk: The court has sentenced Abdul Malek, the former driver of the Directorate General of Health Services, to 13 years in prison under two separate sections in the case of illegal wealth acquisition.
Judge Zakaria Hossain of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court-6 gave this verdict on Sunday (March 23).
The accused, who was in prison, was produced in court today. After the verdict was announced, he was sent back to prison with a warrant of punishment.
On February 15, 2021, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a case against Abdul Malek on charges of illegally acquiring wealth and concealing information about his wealth. The plaintiff and investigation officer of the case was ACC Assistant Director Syed Nazrul Islam.
The case statement said that the accused, Abdul Malek, concealed information about acquiring movable and immovable assets worth Tk 93 lakh 53 thousand 648 in the asset declaration submitted to the ACC. He has acquired and possessed immovable and movable assets worth 1 crore 50 lakh 31 thousand 810 taka outside his known source of income.
On October 27, 2021, ACC Assistant Director Syed Nazrul Islam filed a chargesheet against him.
On September 20, 2020, Malek was arrested by RAB from the Turag area of the capital with a foreign pistol and fake money. A case was filed against him at the Turag police station under the Arms Control Act and the Special Powers Act.
Later, the court sentenced him to a total of 30 years in prison under two sections, 15 years each.
Meanwhile, the verdict in another case involving Abdul Malek and his wife,, Nargis Begum, on charges of acquiring illegal wealth has been postponed to April 16 as the verdict has not been ready.
