The Crime Desk: DIG Jamil Hasan of the Barisal Range of Police is like a landlord from yesterday. He bought 40 acres (120 ha) of land for the resort. He rebuilt his ancestral house on 30 acres of land. Next to it, there is a cow farm on at least 36 acres of land. Along with this, there is a cow market, from which they take the lease. These lands of his are in the Uzirpur upazila of Barisal. Apart from this, he has two flats in Dhaka, in one of which his family lives. Another one is getting ready. He has made this fortune in the last four to five years.
How is it possible to acquire so much wealth in just a few years? If asked, the executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). Iftekharuzzaman told the media, “It is not unusual for a police officer to have this much wealth.” Because who do they think of as a role model? Former IGP or Police Commissioner? If they can have thousands of bighas of land, why shouldn’t a DIG have hundreds of bighas of land? Now it is part of the system. Naturally, it is not possible to buy so much land or a flat with legitimate earnings without abuse of power or illegal transactions. In order to stop these, it is now a matter of time to make a provision to get prior approval from the government before buying the assets of government officials and employees. Besides, they will not be closed.
Jamil Hasan joined the SP of Faridpur in 2012 with the interest of the then Local Government Minister, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain. After that, the friendship with the minister started to increase, and the power and influence also started to increase. He often called politicians and journalists to their offices and abused them in vulgar language. It was at that time that he started renovating the old house. Then the contractors in Faridpur had to pay rod-cement for the construction of that house. Several contractors confirmed the information to Ittefaq on the condition of anonymity.
Jamil Hasan joined the BCS police cadre as an ASP in the 20th batch. After the formation of the Awami League government in 2009, he did not look back. He has worked in various important places. He was in the highest circles of power. For more than four years, he served as the SP of Faridpur. In 2021, he supervised the purchase of land by former police chief Benazir Ahmed in Gopalganj while serving as commanding officer of RAB-8 (Barisal). Being trusted by the police chief of the time, his influence was great. He misbehaved with subordinate police officers.
It has been found that after getting promoted before the elections, he was given responsibility as DIG of Barisal Range. Although his home is in the Barisal district, Being posted in his own area, his influence is very high. DIG Jamil Hasan’s nickname is Shaheen. Local people know him as SP Shaheen. Although recently he has been visiting the house frequently, as a result, the locals have started to know his new identity.
Has bought a field to build a resort: Jamil Hasan has bought a field in Dakshin Rajapur village of Satla Union of Wazirpur. There, he started the process of building a resort. He has bought at least 40 acres, i.e., 120 bighas of land, in the last three-four years. Earlier, these were paddy lands. Currently, a part of that land has been filled. The rest of the land is being filled. A tin shed is constructed on fill land. The security personnel in charge of that land kept chickens there.
Yesterday, I went to the land and found that the gate was locked. Later, the security personnel spoke on the phone. with Aaron He told the media, “I have been given responsibility here for a month. As a result, I cannot say for sure how much land has been purchased. I keep two thousand chickens in the tin shed. Is the purchase of the land complete or not? When asked, Harun said, “DIG sir can tell you.”
Just as the former IG of Police, Benazir Ahmed, has come into discussion in the resort case, DIG Jamil Hasan has been in discussion with the people of the area after buying huge land for the resort. Residents of that area do not want to say anything out of fear. A couple of people said, on condition of anonymity, that many did not want to sell paddy land but were forced to do so. DIG gave them a very low price. However, after the purchase of land for Jamil Hasan Resort, the price of land in that area has increased.
Local fishermen and agriculturists said that he bought this huge land in the last four to five years. Due to buying and leaving so much land, farming or fishing on their surrounding land is being disrupted. Many people in the neighborhood are worried that their land will be lost once the resort starts.
Resort-style homestead: DIG Jamil Hasan’s home is in Habibpur village of Otra Union in Uzirpur upazila of Barisal. Yesterday Friday, when I went to his house on the surface, I saw a lock on the main gate. After going to that house the previous day, i.e., Thursday, a security person said that there was no one inside. Outsiders are not allowed inside. His house is at least 8 to 10 acres, i.e., 24 to 30 bighas. There are different types of trees around. The building of the house is quite a bit inside the main gate. As a result, it is not clear from a distance whether the building is three or four stories tall. The contractors in Faridpur had to provide rod-cement during the construction of the boundary of this house and the building itself. Jamil Hasan’s father was an Air Force officer.
After going in front of that house on Thursday, four or five young men came and wanted to know their identity. Then they kept asking why Dig Saheb’s house was being searched. If they were journalists, they ruled not to report on it. Looking inside from the main gate of the house, it seems like a luxury resort. Beautifully cut grass and trees of various species have been planted in rows. However, a neighbor said that the DIG comes home every Thursday. His mother lives in this house. My father died a few years ago. Although it is an ancestral house, the house used to be in a small area. Now the range of houses has increased. He increased the size of the house by buying the surrounding land.
There is also a market with a cow farm; a huge cow farm has been built in Habibpur village. He has this huge cow farm on at least 10 to 12 acres of land on the side of the main road in Habibpur village. A cow stall has been set up on his land. For the past five years, locals have been selling cows in addition to their farm cows at this market on Sundays and Wednesdays. However, he has to pay 500 rupees as rent from each cow as a cow sale.
Yusuf Ali, the tea shopkeeper inside the hut, was talking to this reporter, saying, “This hut belongs to DIG Jamil Sir.” They profit from this market. Here in the in the village, people can bring cows and sell them. Along with this, DIG sir’s farm cows are also sold. Earlier, it was on a small scale; now, the range of shops has increased.
It has been seen that the distance from the market to the farm is quite a bit. But no one is allowed to go near the farm. The entire area is covered by CCTV. One of the farmers present there, without identifying himself, said that cows have various diseases, and because of this, we do not allow anyone to enter the farm. From a distance, it was understood that there are still about 200 cows on the farm. Two-thirds of the cows have been sold for sacrifice.
Two flats and four cars in Dhaka: He has two luxury flats in Rampura and Khilgaon in Dhaka. There are four luxury cars. House number C-597 on Khilgaon main road in the Khilgaon residential area is Kapotaksh Fazal Garden. One flat is on each floor of the nine-story apartment complex. Each flat is 1600 square feet. The construction of the apartment was completed seven years ago. Jamil Hasan lives with his family in the seven-story flat of this building. He owns the flat. This luxurious flat was purchased six years ago. Yesterday, I went to that apartment and talked to the caretaker. He said, DIG sir went to Barisal with his family before Eid. But when he comes to Dhaka, he lives in this house. He is currently locked in his flat.
A total of 128 flats are in a 16-story building on 30 khata of land on Road No. 13 in the Banashree residential area of East Rampura, Rampura Thana. Each flat is 1800 square feet. The name of the building is Police Park. The construction of the building, under the initiative of the Dhaka Police Family Welfare Association, is almost complete. The owners of the flats in this building are officers from the rank of Superintendent of Police and above. Jamil Hasan has a flat in this building. As the flats were constructed under the initiative of the association, the householders spent Tk 2 crore per capita. Three officers are already living in that building. However, most of the flats are being sold by police officers. Each flat is being sold for 3 crore rupees.
Going to the police park building yesterday, it was seen that its construction work is almost finished. Now the interior design work for various flats is left. The office staff of Police Park Bhawan have gone home for Eid vacation. A caretaker named Kamrul said that the owners of flats in this building are police officers of the SP, DIG, and IGP ranks. They are building it on their own initiative. Most of the sirs are selling their flats. When asked whether DIG Jamil Hasan has a flat or not, he said that he has not boarded the flat. But I don’t know whether to sell it or not.
When asked about these assets, DIG Jamil Hasan said, “The house in Habibpur was obtained from ancestral sources. The amount of land is more than 10 acres. Whatever is done in the house, it is with the wealth of our house. These were left by my father. And I bought the cow farm land in 2008. The amount of that will probably be like 6 acres. When asked, he said, ‘I don’t have any resorts. I have not bought any land for the resort. When asked about the two flats in Dhaka, he said, ‘I have a flat in Dhaka. That too with a loan from the bank. Apart from this, I have no other assets.
What action will the Anti-Corruption Commission take? How does a DIG rank officer have so much wealth? Will the Anti-Corruption Commission take any action? When asked to know, ACC Commissioner Zahurul Haque told the media, “We take it seriously when there is a complaint of corruption against someone. If a police officer has assets beyond their known income and comes to our attention, we will certainly investigate. If there is a report specifically mentioning the information in the particularly important media, we discuss it in the commission meeting and send it for investigation. After that, if the investigation committee confirms the truth of that information, then we do not decide to file a case. If this DIG sir has illegal assets and we receive a specific complaint or we get any information, then an inquiry committee must be sent to investigate. Source: Ittefaq.
