International Desk: The death toll from the powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake that hit Herat province in the western part of Afghanistan has increased to more than 320, the United Nations said. More than six hundred people were injured. 12 villages were completely destroyed due to the earthquake that struck on Saturday (October 7) local time. News from NDTV

More than 600 people have been injured in several earthquakes in the western province of Herat, local officials said.

The earthquake hit the country’s western Herat province around 11 a.m. local time on Saturday.

The earthquake was followed by five major aftershocks, whose centers were near the largest city in the region. According to officials, 12 villages in Zinda Jan and Ghorian districts were completely destroyed.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), six earthquakes occurred in western Afghanistan, the largest of which had a magnitude of 6.3. The epicenter of the earthquake that struck on Saturday was 40 kilometers northwest of Herat, the agency said. After this earthquake, five strong aftershocks of magnitudes 5.5, 4.7, 6.3, 5.9, and 4.6 were felt in the country.
