International Desk: A delegation led by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has arrived in North Korea to attend the 70th anniversary of the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953. China has also sent a government delegation to the country.
The Russian delegation arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday (July 25) evening local time, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. A Chinese Communist Party delegation led by Politburo member Li Hongzhong also attended. It is reported that delegations from these two superpower countries will participate in the 70th anniversary celebrations of ‘Victory Day’ in Pyongyang on Thursday (July 27).
The country’s state media said an event that would “go down in history” was planned. Satellite images also show that North Korea is preparing for a large-scale military parade. Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Sergei Shoigu’s visit will help strengthen military relations between Russia and North Korea.
The visit will be an important stage in the development of cooperation between the two countries. Both North Korea’s weapons tests and US military exercises with South Korea are intensifying. North Korea has fired three separate missiles since last week in protest over the deployment of a nuclear-armed submarine to South Korea.
Since the beginning of 2022, North Korea has conducted about 100 missile tests. Russia and China have thwarted US efforts to strengthen UN Security Council sanctions over North Korea’s missile tests.
