International Desk: 45 people were killed in the attack by the terrorist group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). The attack was carried out in a camp for internally displaced persons in the northeastern part of the country.

The United Nations peacekeeping mission reported this information. The attack took place from Sunday (June 13) evening to Monday morning. The attack is believed to have been carried out by fighters from an armed group called the Cooperative for the Development of Congo, or CODECO. The site of the attack is 5 kilometers (3 mi) from the UN peacekeeping base in Bulle. CODECO claimed that they would protect the Lendu community from other ethnic groups and the Congolese army. In a statement after the attack, the United Nations peacekeeping mission expressed its condolences to the families of the victims. The organization wished the injured a speedy recovery. The attack is a grave violation of international humanitarian law, the statement said. The peacekeeping mission wishes to recognize that such deliberate attacks on civilians amount to war crimes.

Maki Lombe, a witness, told the Reuters news agency that he saw “more than 40 bodies” lying on the ground. He escaped at night and survived. “They started shooting,” civil society representative Desiree Malodra told AFP. Many people were burned to death in their homes. Others were killed with knives.
