Dhaka Bureau: The Ministry of Agriculture will allow the import of onions from Monday (June 5) due to abnormally high prices in the market. The Ministry said that this decision has been taken to protect the interests of consumers due to the abnormal increase in onion prices. This information was provided in a press release of the Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday (June 4).
According to the notification, the Ministry of Agriculture will allow onion imports starting Monday. The Ministry of Agriculture has taken this decision to protect the interests of all consumers, including reducing the suffering of working people with limited income due to the abnormal increase in onion prices.
In order to protect the interests of the farmers, the onion import permit was suspended on March 15 so that the farmers were not harmed by producing onions.
Agriculture Minister and Awami League presidium member Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak said the issue of onion imports is like a crisis for us. If the import of onions is allowed, the price falls drastically, farmers suffer, and they lose interest in onion cultivation. And if you don’t import, the price goes up, and consumers suffer. Therefore, we always take import decisions considering the interests of all, including farmers, producers, and consumers.
