International Desk: Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang held a meeting with Myanmar’s junta. During the meeting, he discussed the country’s crisis and strengthening bilateral relations with the head of the military government. This information was reported by the British news agency Reuters, citing Myanmar’s state broadcaster.

After the meeting with the head of Myanmar’s military government, Min Aung Hlaing, the Chinese foreign minister said that his visit was not only a sign of friendship between the two countries but also an expression of China’s position on behalf of Myanmar on the world stage.

According to the report, the Chinese Foreign Minister discussed the stability and development of Myanmar with the General. They exchanged views on Myanmar’s political situation, stability, and development. They included cooperation on border trade, investment, and energy.

In 2021, the military overthrew the civilian government elected by Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, political instability and violence have increased in the country. Pro-democracy and anti-junta movements are being severely suppressed.

Thousands of opposition and pro-democracy activists have been imprisoned by the army. They brutally suppressed the protests, killing at least 3,240 civilians. The move by Myanmar’s junta has been criticized by the international community, especially Western powers.

The United States and several European countries have imposed sanctions against many associated with the military government. However, Russia and China are still allies of Myanmar’s military government.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday (May 2) that Qin Gang will visit Myanmar and India from May 2 to 5. It is to be noted that he will attend the meeting of foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to be held in India.
