International Desk: Turkish forces have killed the suspected leader of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced this information in an announcement.

This information was reported in a report by the British media on Monday (May 1).

After the killing of IS chief Abu Ibrahim al-Qureshi in February last year, Abu Hussein al-Qureshi was believed to have taken over the leadership of IS.

Erdogan told broadcaster TRT Turk that the IS leader was killed in an operation by the Turkish intelligence agency MIT on Saturday. However, IS has not commented on this matter so far.

Besides, Erdoan said, the MIT intelligence agency had been following Qureshi for a long time. However, these claims by Erdoan could not be verified impartially by the BBC, according to the report.

Without giving details about the killing of the IS chief, Erdogan said, “We will continue to fight against the terrorist organization.”

The news agency Reuters quoted Syrian sources as saying that the operation was carried out near the northern town of Zandaris, near the Turkish border.
