International desk: Britain will celebrate a public holiday on the occasion of the coronation of King Charles III next May. The coronation comes eight months after the death of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

A public holiday will be observed on May 8, two days after the ceremony at Westminster Abbey, Downing Street said in a statement.

As royal as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the event is an opportunity for families and communities across the country to come together and celebrate, the government said.

King Charles III (73) will be formally crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey in accordance with Britain’s last nine hundred years of tradition. Charles’ wife Camilla (75) will also be crowned that day.

Charles was proclaimed King shortly after the Queen’s death on September 8. He also took the responsibility of the head of state of 14 Commonwealth countries including Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 at Balmoral Palace in Scotland. He made a record from the throne for 70 years.
