International Desk: President of Iran Ibrahim Raisi has invited King Salman of Saudi Arabia for a visit to Tehran. This information was reported by Iran on Monday.
An agreement was reached between the two countries last month to restore relations. These two countries signed this agreement on March 10 through the mediation of China. Before the agreement, the two countries held several rounds of dialogue in Iraq and Oman. Following this, Tehran has now invited the Saudi king to visit Iran.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanani said yesterday that the King of Saudi Arabia has been invited by Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi to visit Tehran.
Nasser said that Iranian President Raisi has already received an invitation to visit Saudi Arabia.
According to the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Nasser expressed hope that the two countries will reopen their mutual diplomatic missions by May 9.
In the weekly press conference yesterday, Nasser said that both countries are emphasizing activating the embassies on time so that Iranian Muslims can participate in this year’s holy Hajj. Representatives of both countries recently visited their respective embassies and consulates to begin the process of re-opening the mission.
The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia met in Beijing on April 6 with the aim of normalizing relations.
In 2016, Saudi Arabia executed Nimr al-Nimr, an influential religious leader of the Shia community. The Saudi embassy and consulate in Iran were attacked in protest of this incident. Because of this, Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic relations with Iran. After seven years, the two countries agreed to restore relations.
