International Desk: Armed terrorist groups have attacked two villages in northeastern Burkina Faso, near the border with Niger. 44 civilians were killed. Last Thursday (April 6), this incident happened in this West African country. This information was reported by the British media, the BBC, on Sunday (April 9), citing local officials.

According to reports, armed terrorist groups attacked the villages of Kourakou and Tondobi in the Sahel region of northern Burkina Faso bordering Niger on Thursday (April 6). About 44 people were killed in the attack. However, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

Rodolphe Sorgo, lieutenant governor of the Sahel region, said Thursday’s attack killed 31 people in Kourakau and 13 in the village of Tondobi. Other villagers were also injured in the attack. However, their exact number is not known.

He also said, “Steps have been taken to stabilize the attacked area.” An army operation is underway to identify the attackers.

A large group of terrorists entered the village late on Thursday night, a resident of Kourakau told AFP. He added, “We heard gunshots throughout the night.” Dozens of people were killed in the overnight attack on Friday morning.

The impoverished Sahel region has been battling al-Qaeda and Islamic State jihadists for seven years, The Guardian reported. During the crisis, thousands of people have been killed and more than two million have been displaced. Last February, 51 soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack in the Diut region in the north of the country.

Burkina Faso’s military, led by Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba, seized power in January last year, promising an end to violence. But he failed to stop these attacks and violence and was ousted by Captain Ibrahim Traore in a second coup in September.

Burkina Faso’s new military chief vowed this week to step up a dynamic offensive against the jihadists.
