Israel’s new government has proposed giving the country’s highest court the power to overturn any Supreme Court decision through a vote in parliament. The Netanyahu government also proposed handing over the power to appoint judges to the parliament. This is why the protest is going on.
Opponents of these reforms claim that if the proposal is passed, the country’s Supreme Court will be weakened. About 500,000 pro-democracy protesters took to the streets across the country on Saturday, according to protest coordinators. Israeli media outlet Haaretz called the protest program “the largest demonstration in the country’s history”.
Opposition leader Yair Lapid said in the southern city of Be’er Sheva that the country was facing the biggest crisis in its history. A wave of terrorism is hitting us, our economy is collapsing, and money is being laundered out of the country.
Referring to the signing of the agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, he further said that Iran signed a new agreement with Saudi Arabia yesterday. But this government’s only concern is to crush Israeli democracy.
