United Nations must take initiatives to stop war: Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka Bureau:  Highlighting the suffering of people all over the world, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to take special initiatives to stop the Russia-Ukraine war.

Sheikh Hasina made this call in a meeting with the UN Secretary General at the Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC) on Saturday, March 4.

Later, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen briefed the journalists. Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen was present at this time.

The minister said that in the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the UN Secretary General to take special initiatives to stop the war quickly.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the UN Secretary General that we are suffering a lot as a result of the war. Inflation has increased in the country due to the non-arrival of goods, especially due to sanctions. People are suffering a lot. People are suffering all over the world. So the war needs to be stopped as soon as possible.

Sheikh Hasina said that if the war ends soon, it will be good for the country and for the world. Those who are profiting more from the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on for more than a year, should help the countries that are suffering from the war.

Highlighting various initiatives of the government to reduce the suffering of the people of Bangladesh in the current world situation, the Prime Minister said that the government is providing daily essential food items to around 1 crore low-income people in Bangladesh.

The Rohingya crisis and the speedy return of Rohingya were discussed in the meeting.

The foreign minister said it has been almost 6 years and not a single Rohingya has returned. We are all trying.

In the meeting, the UN Secretary General and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina agreed that it was not right to wait for political change in Myanmar. Because it is not clear when political change will happen in Myanmar.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina requested that the UN Secretary General take special initiative in this regard.

The Prime Minister highlighted the deteriorating situation in Rohingya camps.

The Prime Minister said that recently many of these Rohingyas have been engaged in criminal activities. Drug dealing, human trafficking, even fighting It is likely to increase in the future.

Seeking the UN Secretary General’s assistance in transferring more Rohingyas from Cox’s Bazar camp to Bhashanchar, the Prime Minister said that 30,000 people have been taken to Bhashanchar. If you help, we can take many more people there.

In response, the UN Secretary General said you (Sheikh Hasina) could take the initiative in this regard.

Regarding religious extremism in different parts of the world, the UN Secretary General said that in some places there is fanaticism in the name of religion.

In this regard, the Prime Minister said that those who are bigots actually have no religion. They have no boundaries. It would be great if we could all stop being bigoted about this.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina arrived in Qatar to attend the Fifth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC-5) in Doha.

The Prime Minister arrived at Doha Hamad International Airport at 1:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 4.

Earlier on Saturday (March 4), at around 11:30 p.m., the Prime Minister left Dhaka for Doha on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines BG-325 VVIP flight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
