International Desk: Iran has executed former deputy defense minister and British-Iranian citizen Alireza Akbari. CNN reported this information on Saturday citing the country’s state media. Earlier on Wednesday (January 11), Alireza Akbari’s family was asked to visit the prison for the last time, according to reports.
On Thursday (January 12), his wife complained that Iran was preparing to execute Alireza Akbari. He has since been taken to solitary confinement. Iran found Alireza Akbari guilty of spying for the UK.
He was arrested in 2019. However, Alireza denied all the allegations against him. The UK also called on Iran to halt its execution and release him immediately.
British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley complained in a tweet that Alireza’s death sentence was a politically motivated act by the Iranian government. They are barbarians, human life is not important to them.
Alireza was Iran’s deputy defense minister during the regime of former reformist president Mohammad Khatami. Khatami was president of Iran for two terms from 1997 to 2005.
