Strong earthquake shook Indonesia

International Desk: A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.6 has hit Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia. One person was reported injured. During an earthquake, people leave their homes and come out into the streets. This information was given in a report of the Washington Post.

According to the report, the Tanimba Islands are a group of about 30 islands in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. A tsunami warning was issued as a result of the earthquake, but it was lifted three hours later. The strong earthquake was followed by four more aftershocks. As a result, earthquakes were also felt in the northern part of Australia.

Officials from Indonesia’s disaster management agency said strong tremors were felt for 3 to 5 seconds. One person was injured. 15 houses and two school buildings were damaged.

According to the country’s geophysics agency BMKG, the earthquake struck at a depth of 130 kilometers at 2:47 p.m. local time on Monday (January 9). A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted at 5:43 am local time on Tuesday (January 10).

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center recorded a magnitude 7.6 earthquake. The US Geological Survey also recorded a magnitude 7.6 earthquake.

Indonesia is located in an active seismic zone in the Pacific Ocean. This region is called the Ring of Fire. The country has been affected by severe earthquakes many times before. In 2018, an earthquake on the island of Sulawesi killed more than 2,000 people.
