The Crime Desk: 12 murders have taken place in the Matlab Uttar Upazila of Chandpur in the last year. The president of the Upazila Corruption Prevention Committee, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury, said that these murders have no connection with the current context.
He said that these are more due to lack of police activity than lack of mutual respect, greed for wealth, social unrest, lack of trust in the rural arbitration system, family feuds, and lack of family rule.
Since there are no industries, housing projects, and encroachments here, the fact that so many murders are happening is really worrying, Matiur Rahman Chowdhury expressed his concern.
Although there was one murder every month in 2024, there were 6 murders in this upazila in the last 3 months of August, September, and October.
In this regard, Benazir Ahmed Munshi, headmaster of Chengarchar Government Model High School in the upazila, said, “Once upon a time, people had a lot of faith in the rural arbitration system. But for a long time, people’s faith in the arbitration system has been eroded due to various reasons, including economic benefits. That is why there are so many problems.”
He also said that once there was family education or discipline. There was respect between the young and the old. Now, due to social unrest, these are also almost disappearing.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Matlab Uttar Police Station Mohammad Rabiul Haque said, “Although these murders were committed for family reasons, murders are still murders. We have already been able to bring many of them under the law. My statement on this matter is very clear: no one will be spared, whoever the culprit is.”
