International Desk: A passenger bus and a truck collided on a highway in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais on Saturday morning (December 21). At least 38 people were killed. Officials in the country have reported this information. CNN
The Minas Gerais fire department said that 13 more people injured in the accident were taken to a nearby hospital. The bus had left Sao Paulo and was carrying 45 passengers.
Authorities in the country said that all victims have already been evacuated from the scene, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Witnesses told rescue teams that a tire on the bus burst. As a result, the driver lost control and collided with a truck. However, others said that a granite block hit the bus.
In addition, the bus also collided with a car. However, all three people in the car are unharmed.
President Lula da Silva expressed his condolences over the accident. “I express my deepest condolences and my prayers to the families of the more than 30 people who died in the accident,” he said.
Brazilian police said the country’s highways had not seen such a large accident since 2007.
