The Crime Desk: The Appellate Division did not grant bail to Hallmark Group Chairman Jasmine Islam in the case of embezzlement of Tk 858.733 million from Janata Bank against a fake LC.

On Thursday (November 28), the 5-member Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed gave this order. It also asked Jasmine Islam to come back after 3 months for the bail hearing.

Although Jasmine Islam’s lawyer, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, told the court that the maximum sentence in this case is 7 years in prison under the law under which this case was filed, But she has been in jail for 8 years; she should be granted bail. Moreover, the ACC is also unable to issue a charge sheet.

However, the ACC informed us that the investigation officer filed a charge sheet in this case on October 30. However, since there is no commission now, it cannot be approved. Later, the Appellate Division put Jasmine Islam’s bail hearing on hold for 3 months.

Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal represented Jasmine in the court. Advocate Asif Hasan represented the ACC.

Earlier, in 2022, the High Court had denied bail to Jasmine Islam in this case. An appeal was filed in the Appellate Division against this order.

On March 10, 2019, the High Court granted her bail by granting a rule in the case of embezzlement of Tk 85,873,616 from Janata Bank against a fake LC. The ACC appealed to the Appellate Division against this. On June 16 of the same year, the Appellate Division cancelled her bail and ordered her to surrender within four weeks. Jasmine Islam later surrendered. Later, when she applied for bail in the High Court, the court issued a rule.
