International Desk: The head of the Palestinian armed group Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, was killed by Israeli forces in a raid in the southern part of Gaza. On Friday (October 18), Hamas also confirmed the death of Yahya Sinwar. Now CNN and BBC have reported how Sinwar was killed.

A unit of the IDF’s 828th Bislamak Brigade was on patrol in the Tal al-Sultan area of the Rafah region on Wednesday, the BBC reported, citing the Israel Defense Forces. They identified three armed men and engaged in a gunfight with them. All of them were killed. The encounter did not appear to be anything special at the time, and the troops did not return to the scene until Thursday morning.

An uncanny resemblance to the Hamas leader was noticed when the body was being examined on Thursday. However, the body was left there due to the risk of a suicide trap.

According to CNN, the finger was amputated to confirm the body was Sinwar’s.

Israel’s chief pathologist, Chen Kugel, who performed an autopsy on Sinwar’s body, said the Hamas leader was killed by a gunshot wound to the head. Chen Kugel, who signed Sinwar’s death certificate, told CNN in an interview that in addition to the bullet to the head, the Hamas leader suffered a severe brain injury.

CNN reported that Sinwar’s body is currently in Israel. Citing sources, the report said that Sinwar’s body could now be used as a bargaining chip in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. According to a local media report, Sinwar’s body has been kept in a secret place in Israel.
