City Reporter: It has been alleged that a youth was beaten to death in the port city of Chittagong. This incident took place on the Udal road under the Panchlaish police station of Chittagong city on August 14, but after more than a month on Sunday (September 22), the matter came to light when video footage went viral. The name of the victim of the murder is Mohammad Shahadat (24).
According to the police and local sources, on the night of August 14, some young men tied Shahadat’s hands and beat him on the flyover in the gate number two area of the Panchlaish police station in Chittagong city to the tune of ‘Madhu Hoi Hoi Anre Bish Khawaila’. After his death was confirmed, his body was dumped on the road in front of a local hospital.
The deceased’s father, Mohammad Haroon, said that Shahadat was working as a laborer in the fruit market of Kotwali police station in the city. On August 13, at around 2 o’clock, he left home for work. On the same day, when he called around 7 p.m., he said that he would return home in a while. But as the son did not come home till late night, when he called again, the mobile phone was found to be switched off. The next day, around 9 p.m., Shahadat’s body was found on the side of the road opposite the Badna Shah Mia (Rah.) Shrine near Pravartak Mor of the city. After the recovery of the body that day, after the autopsy, it was explained to the family, but it was not told how Shahadat died. On September 21, when a video of a young man being brutally beaten by some youths by tying his hands and’singing’ went viral, the relatives identified the beaten youth as Shahadat.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police Mohammad Raich Uddin said, after reviewing the viral video, we found out that the name of the beaten youth is Shahadat. When the video was shown to Shahadat’s wife, she identified her husband. A case has been registered against an unknown accused in this incident. Police are working to identify those involved in the incident and arrest them.
