Dhaka Bureau: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police is seeking access to the transaction dashboard of Bangladesh Bank to prevent money laundering. Additional IGP Mohammad Ali Mia said, “Bangladesh Bank monitors unusual transactions through bank accounts. If a person from CID has access to the dashboard through which they monitor transactions, action can be taken as soon as suspicious transactions are seen.
He commented that taking action against criminals in the existing system becomes time-consuming.
He said this at a function organized on the occasion of the release of a research report titled ‘Challenging of Controlling Illegal Money Transfer through Mobile Apps: A Study on Online Gambling’ at the CID headquarters on Sunday (June 30).
The CID chief said, ‘We are trying to get access to the dashboard. Hopefully, Bangladesh Bank will agree. Otherwise, it will not be possible to take action against financial criminals.
He said, ‘Foreign currency earned by expatriates is not entering Bangladesh. They are staying in all the other countries, including Dubai. According to the instructions, the agents are taking money from various sources and distributing it to the mobile banking operator Cash, Bikash, Rocket, or Waya.
The CID chief also commented that mobile banking operators should be brought under the law for suspicious transactions or e-money transaction offenses.
Claiming that the MFS (Mobile Financial Service) institutions do not investigate the source and purpose of the agent’s money, the CID chief said, ‘We are the source of income for the agents; why do they want to make more money through e-money? Is it legitimate or not? Is it illegal income? We are looking into whether Bangladeshi money is being circulated in Bangladesh by blocking foreign remittances.
