Dhaka Bureau: During the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigation, there is a nationwide discussion on former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed. However, no information is available from anyone for sure about where he is now. And so the smoke has appeared about his position.
However, according to several media sources, he is staying in Singapore with his wife and children. The source says that Benazir left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with his wife and daughter on a Singapore Airlines flight on May 4. They said that they are staying there due to the treatment of their wife.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission summoned the former Inspector General of Police along with his wife and three daughters. A summons notice was sent to them from the head office of the organization last Tuesday. The notice asked Benazir Ahmed to appear at the ACC office on June 6 and his wife and daughters on June 9.
ACC has found 621 bigha of land in several districts, including Gopalganj, Madaripur, and Dhaka; four flats in Gulshan; 33 bank accounts; shares in 19 companies; three bank accounts; and savings certificates of Tk 30 lakh in the name of Benazir Ahmed and his wife and children. Later, ACC lawyers applied to the court to take legal action against these assets. In view of ACC’s application, the court has ordered the seizure of these assets. Although it is believed that Benazir Ahmed left the country with his family on May 4 before this court order came, However, it has not been confirmed by law enforcement or any government department that he is actually in Singapore or staying in any other country.
According to sources, not only in the country. Benazir Ahmed has assets in the USA, Canada, and the UAE. The ACC is investigating such news. The organization has sought information through the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) to know the amount of assets Benazir has in these three countries.
It should be noted that Benazir Ahmed was IGP from April 15, 2020, to September 30, 2022. Prior to this, he served as Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Director General of RAB. In December 2021, the United States imposed sanctions on seven officials for alleged human rights violations. Benazir Ahmed’s name was also there.
