International Desk: Lawmakers are involved in fierce fighting in Taiwan’s parliament. They clashed on Friday over a disagreement over law reform. Lai Ching has recently become the new president of Taiwan. He will join work on Monday. Such an unexpected incident has happened before.
According to the Reuters report, some lawmakers pushed and shouted at each other outside the parliament before the vote on the new reform proposal began.
Video of the incident showed the lawmakers riding around the Speaker’s seat. Some jumped on the table and dragged colleagues to the floor. After a while, the situation calmed down, but fighting started again in the afternoon.
Lai was elected president last January. He will officially start his duties on Monday. But his party, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), lost its majority in parliament.
Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), won more seats than the DPP. But that is not enough to form their own majority. So the party is working with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).
The DPP said the KMT and TPP were trying to force through proposals without the traditional consultation process. The DPP called it an abuse of power.
