International Desk: At least 16 passengers lost their lives after a bus overturned in a mountainous area in the South American country of Peru. Local authorities confirmed the accident happened in the country’s mountainous Ayacucho region. News from AFP.
The country’s health ministry said in a statement that the bus carrying 40 passengers was traveling from Lima to the city of Ayacucho on Tuesday morning (May 14) when the accident occurred. The bus overturned and rolled down a slope.
Ayacucho official Wyber Vega told reporters that 13 bodies have already been recovered. Besides, the bodies of three others are trapped under the bus. He confirmed the deaths of 16 people in the bus accident.
He said that rescue operations are being hampered due to bad weather, including hail.
Road accidents occur regularly in Peru due to several factors, including speeding in the mountainous regions. Earlier on April 30, at least 25 people were killed when a bus fell into a ditch in the Cajamarca region.
