International Desk: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal got bail. The Supreme Court granted him interim bail on Friday.
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 in Delhi’s Excise Policy case. Since then, the Aam Aadmi Party chief has been imprisoned in Tihar.
The Supreme Court said that Kejri will stay out of jail until the last phase of Lok Sabha polls on June 1. He will have to surrender to the jail authorities on June 2.
Kejriwal petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking bail to allow him to campaign in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. ED contradicted him in an affidavit on Tuesday. According to them, the law is one for all. Campaigning in elections is not a fundamental, constitutional, or even legal right.
In view of Kejri’s bail plea, the Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjeev Khanna and Dipankar Dutt said on Friday, ‘I will not try to parallelize the two issues. He was arrested in March. It could have been done earlier or later. And after 21 days, it doesn’t matter. Kejriwal will surrender on June 2.
Kejri lawyer Shadan Farasat said that efforts are being made so that the AAP chief can be released from Tihar Jail on Friday. The Supreme Court orally announced interim bail until June 1. Instructions are not uploaded on their website. After uploading, it will be known whether there are any other bail conditions or not.
