He said Bangladesh Bank is a state institution. But journalists are not allowed to enter there. If the information is published, will it be a major sabotage? Are financial journalists saboteurs?
He said this on Tuesday (May 7) at the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) office in the capital’s Paltan, commemorating the late journalist Moazzem Hossain and discussing the topic of ‘Challenges of Macroeconomics and the Way Forward’.
The reputation of Bangladesh Bank is being damaged due to the loss of information. Debapriya Bhattacharya said Bangladesh Bank is a big source of information. Earlier, we depended on Bangladesh Bank for many information, including imports and exports. But now it appears that some are getting the information, some are not; Businessmen are getting information while journalists are not. If the business group gets this information, there is an opportunity to become a syndicate in the market.
On the one hand, information will be hidden; on the other hand, digital Bangladesh and smart Bangladesh will be thought of; these two are conflicting, he said.
Claiming the ban on the entry of journalists to the central bank as a violation of information, the economist said that the reputation of Bangladesh Bank has been damaged due to self-restraint and control. I don’t know whether this control is done by the bank’s board or whether they are directed from a higher level. But as a result of this, there is no doubt that the reputation of Bangladesh Bank will be damaged.
He complained that there is a lack of policy coordination in the country and that there is a weakness of political power in dealing with this lack of coordination.
