Sports Desk: Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was the hero in lifting Aston Villa to the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League. He saved two penalties in the quarterfinal against Lille to win the team.
However, Martinez will not be able to play in the first leg of the semi-final against Greek club Olympiakos on May 2. Argentina’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper has been banned by UEFA for one match. Because he has seen three yellow cards in the two legs of the conference league quarterfinals.
Martinez was yellow carded twice in the second leg of the quarterfinals. The referee gave him a yellow card for the first time in the 39th minute of the match. After that, when the match went to the tri-breaker, Martinez got a yellow card there as well.
In total, Martinez was shown two yellow cards in the match, but the referee did not show a red card. Because according to UEFA rules, a yellow card in regular time of a match does not add up to a yellow card in tiebreaker time. But again, it adds up to overall card viewing. So even if you don’t get a red card, you are rightly banned.
