International Desk: 12 people were killed after being hit by a speeding truck in the eastern state of Bihar, India. Several others were injured. Among the dead are women and children.
According to NDTV, on Sunday (November 20) night in the state’s Vaishali district, people participating in a religious procession were hit by a speeding truck.
The incident took place around 9 pm on Sunday in Desri Thana area of North Bihar district, about 30 km from Patna, the capital of Bihar state. The religious procession gathers in front of a ‘peepal’ tree on the roadside to offer prayers to a local deity originally known as ‘Bhumi Baba’. At one point a speeding truck ran over the procession and casualties occurred.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident. At the same time, he announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of each victim and Rs 50,000 to each injured person.
