International Desk: Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari has been elected as the President of the country for the second time. He is also the 14th President of Pakistan. News of PTI.
Pakistan’s presidential election was held on Saturday (March 9). Before this, Zardari served as president from 2008 to 2013. He is the first civilian of Pakistan to be elected as the President of the country for a second term.
Zardari, 68, was a joint candidate of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). His rival, Mahmud Khan Achakzai (75), was the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) candidate.
Zardari got 255 votes, and his opponent got 119 votes. Businessman-turned-politician Zardari is the husband of Pakistan’s slain Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto.
According to the constitution of Pakistan, the newly elected members of the National Assembly and the four provincial assemblies are elected through the Electoral College.
Pashtunkhawa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) chief Achakzai was contesting from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC). The party was joined by independent candidates backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
