International Desk: In the US state of Alabama, a defendant will be executed by using nitrogen gas after a few hours. There is no precedent in the history of the world for any accused to be sentenced to death in this way. On Wednesday, the court rejected the application made by the accused, Kenneth Smith, requesting to stay the decision on the execution of the death sentence. This was reported by Reuters in a report.
According to the report by the news agency Reuters, the governor of Alabama, Kay Ivy, has set the execution time between 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday and 6:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Kenneth’s body will be pumped with nitrogen gas through a mask for 15 minutes. This will be America’s first execution by nitrogen gas.
Kenneth has been imprisoned since 1996. His lawyers told the BBC they were trying to appeal again to the country’s highest court at the last minute.
An attempt was made to execute him by lethal injection two years ago. But the concerned could not find Kenneth’s vein to inject the needle before midnight. As a result, the death sentence expired, and he survived the journey.
On March 18, 1988, Kenneth Smith killed 45-year-old Sennett for $1,000. In 2022, a majority of Supreme Court justices allowed Smith to be executed by injection. Three judges of the nine-judge court dissented from the decision.
Kenneth Smith and an accomplice were hired by the woman’s husband, Charles Sennett, to kill Elizabeth Sennett. Counselors said Charles had conspired to get his wife’s insurance money. Later, he committed suicide. Smith’s accomplice was also sentenced to death for the murder. This penalty was implemented in 2010.
