International Desk: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Japan on the first day of the new year has risen to 57. The death toll is expected to increase. Thousands of buildings, vehicles, and boats were damaged in the earthquake. Local authorities said that there may be more earthquakes ahead. AFP reported this information in a report on Wednesday (January 3).

According to the report, the death toll in Japan due to last Monday’s strong earthquake has reached 57 people. Rescuers continued to search desperately for survivors on Wednesday. The damage was so extensive that it could not be immediately assessed. According to Japanese media reports, thousands of houses were destroyed. Water, electricity, and cell phone service are still out in some areas. Residents lamented their uncertain future.

Last Monday, Japan’s Ishikawa region was the epicenter of a 7.6-magnitude earthquake, which caused huge waves and damaged many buildings. The earthquake struck at 4:10 local time. Officials there urged people in coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground after the earthquake hit Noto Prefecture on Honshu Island. The total damage caused by the earthquake is still unknown, but many buildings collapsed in several cities, and many people were trapped under the rubble.

AFP says Noto prefecture in the Ishikawa region has suffered the worst damage. Hundreds of buildings were burned down. The regional government said 57 people have been confirmed dead and 22 seriously injured in the earthquake so far. Thousands of roads and houses have been destroyed due to landslides.
