International Desk: Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was elected the president of Egypt for the third term. The country’s national election authority said on Monday that Sisi won 89.6 percent of the vote. Al-Jazeera news

Voting ended on Tuesday after three days of elections in Egypt, the Arab world’s most populous country. The vote was held amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in neighboring Gaza and the country’s economic crisis.

Sisi became president in 2013 after the country’s President Mohamed Morsi was ousted from power. He was re-elected in 2018. He won the previous two elections with 97 percent of the vote.

However, international observers have accused Sisi of violating human rights in Egypt.

Sisi came to power and amended the constitution, extending the term of office of the president from four years to six years. Also, the limit of two consecutive terms has been increased from two to three terms.

Sisi was contesting against three other candidates. None of them were high profile. But his main opposition candidate complained that his campaign had been disrupted and dozens of supporters arrested.
