International Desk: The country’s 71-year-old President Vladimir Putin has announced that he will compete in the presidential election held on March 17, 2024, in Russia.

Putin made the announcement at an awards ceremony for participation in Russia’s 2022 war in Ukraine. BBC news.

If Putin stands for election, it is somewhat inevitable that he will be re-elected for a fifth term. Because he has no rival. And the Russian media is completely under his control.

In 2020, the Russian constitution was amended to extend the presidential term from four to six years. As a result, Putin is clearly getting a chance to stand for re-election next year by canceling the previous term.

At the awards ceremony on Friday, Putin said, “I had different thoughts at different times; I will not hide that fact.” But now is the time to make a decision. I will run for president.

Putin made the announcement a day after the upper house of the Russian parliament voted on Thursday to set the election date. The decision to fix the date was unanimously passed by 162 votes in the Federation Council.

Residents of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson regions of Ukraine, which are included in the Russian Federation, will participate in this presidential election in Russia for the first time.

If he wins the March presidential election, Putin could remain in power until 2030, and if he decides to run for president again, he could remain in power until 2036.
