Dhaka Bureau: Misinformation is being spread about the garment industry on social media. The Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested the government identify the miscreants, take action, and provide adequate security for the factories to operate. BGMEA president Farooq Hasan made this request in a press conference at the organization’s office in Uttara on Sunday (November 12).

Farooq Hasan also said, “It is being said on social media that 3 people have died in the Epilion factory, which is not correct at all.” We strongly protest against it. Our sincere request to the government is to take strict action against those who are indulging in such malpractices. Our request to the government is to identify those who are conspiring against this industry and take action. Also, give us adequate security to run industries.

Complaining that factories are being vandalized in various parts of Dhaka in the name of agitation despite the increase in wages, he said, “Since the announcement of wages, some unnamed unruly workers in several factories have illegally struck and beaten the officials on unreasonable demands.” Extensive vandalism and destruction were carried out inside the factory. Under the circumstances, the factory management authorities of about 130 garment factories in Ashulia, Kashimpur, Mirpur, and Konabari have decided to shut down all the activities of the factories for an indefinite period in order to protect the safety of the officers, employees, and workers and to protect the factory property.

He said that in 2010, I made a minimum wage of 3 thousand taka. From 2010 to 2023, the wage growth rate in the garment industry was 316.67 percent. The minimum wage board formed by the government reviewed the minimum wage and announced the minimum wage at 12 thousand 500 taka on November 7. According to the new wage structure, wages have increased by 56.25 percent. For some time now, some areas where the garment industry has been dominant have not had normal labor conditions. This industry is currently going through a critical situation.
