Two of the dead were also claimed to be civilians. Meanwhile, a separatist Armenian human rights official in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh said an Azerbaijani military offensive killed 25 people there on Tuesday.
The separatist Armenian human rights official is Gegham Stepanian. In a post on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, he said two civilians were among the dead. Stepanyan also claimed that 138 people, including 29 civilians, were injured in the attack by Azerbaijan. However, Reuters could not verify his claim.
Tensions between the two countries have been simmering for months over Nagorno-Karabakh, an ethnic Armenian enclave recognized internationally as originally part of Azerbaijan. Recently, 11 Azerbaijani policemen and civilians were killed in a mine explosion and another incident in the disputed territory.
