The report also said that Ukraine launched an offensive in the Donetsk region on Sunday using six mechanized and two tank battalions.
According to the BBC, it was promised that Ukraine would launch a counter-offensive to seize territory held by Russia. But before any such operation, Kiev on Sunday urged everyone to remain silent.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a telegram, “On the morning of June 4, the enemy launched a large-scale attack on five sectors of the southern Donetsk front. In this attack, the Ukrainians tried to break through the Russian defenses. But the enemy did not achieve his goal; they did not succeed in any way.’
Meanwhile, in a separate report, the news agency Reuters said that the attack on Kiev was foiled by Russian forces. They killed 250 Ukrainian soldiers and destroyed 16 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and 21 armored fighting vehicles, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
Ukraine, however, has been planning a counteroffensive for the past few months. But Ukraine wants to take as much time as possible to train troops and receive military equipment from Western allies before launching that offensive.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Ukraine was ready to launch a counterattack to recapture its own territories after defeating Russian troops. He made this claim in an interview with the Wall Street Journal last Saturday.
