7.6-magnitude earthquake hits Tonga

International Desk: An earthquake of 7.6 magnitude has been reported in Tonga, an island nation in the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake was felt in the early hours of Thursday (May 11). BBC news.

No casualties or damage were reported. The quake struck at a depth of 210 km, about 100 km from Tonga’s remote volcanic island of Niuatoputapu, the US Geological Survey said, citing no tsunami risk. News, Times of India

The country’s meteorologist, Gary Vitte, said that ordinary people called us early in the morning saying that they felt the earthquake. However, no damage was reported.

Tonga is a country of only 15,000 people. The island nation is very popular with tourists.
