International Desk: Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that staunch environmentalist King Charles III personally requested him to protect the Amazon rainforest.

Lula and the British monarch met at Buckingham Palace in London on Friday (May 5) evening, ahead of Charles III’s inauguration.

At a press conference in London on Saturday (May 6), Lula said, “The first thing the king told me was to protect the Amazon.” Then I said, I need help.

After Friday’s meeting between Lula and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Britain pledged $100 million to the Amazon Protection Fund.

The fund was established in 2008 to protect the Amazon rainforest. Lula called on developed countries to take climate change seriously. He returned to power in January after serving as president from 2003 to 2010. Upon taking office, Lula pledged to prioritize protecting the Amazon.

Note that 60 percent of the world’s largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon, is located in Brazil. Meanwhile, during his inauguration on Saturday, Lula met briefly with French President Emmanuel Macron, and the two agreed to talk about Ukraine by telephone.
