International Desk: A boat carrying migrants has sunk off the coast of Tunisia. At least 34 people have gone missing, including children.In the last two days, five boats carrying migrants sank off the coast of Tunisia.
The Tunisian Coast Guard confirmed this information on Saturday (March 25).
The country’s authorities say the boat carrying migrants was trying to cross the Mediterranean to Italy.
It is known that in the last two days, 56 boats bound for Europe with immigrants from the coast of the country have been stopped. More than 3,000 migrants have been detained on these boats.
Tunisia, on the Mediterranean coast, has recently become one of the hubs for migrants seeking to move to Europe.
According to UN data, at least 12,000 migrants who have entered Italy so far this year have come from Tunisia. At the same time last year, this number was only 1,300.
Earlier on March 13, a report by Al-Jazeera said that in the first two and a half months of this year, about 17,000 migrants crossed the Mediterranean Sea and arrived in Italy. At the same time the previous year, this number was 6,000.
Hundreds of migrants die every year trying to cross the Mediterranean by boat to reach Europe illegally. According to UN estimates, 300 migrants have died in the Mediterranean so far this year.
