Two trains collided in Greece, killing 26

International Desk: At least 26 people were killed in a head-on collision between two trains in Greece. 85 people were injured. The Guardian newspaper reported this information about the country’s fire brigade.

The accident happened on Tuesday (February 28) evening in the Larissa region.

The governor of Thessaly, Konstantinos Agorastos, told local media that a passenger train from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki collided with a freight train from Thessaloniki to Larissa.

About 250 passengers were safely evacuated to Thessaloniki, Agorastos said.

Meanwhile, flames and black smoke were seen billowing from the derailed coaches after the accident. Later, the fire service and rescue team started working immediately. The train’s four coaches derailed.Among these, the first two compartments are twisted.

A local fire service spokesman told a press conference that at least 26 bodies have been recovered so far. The cause of the accident is not clear. Rescue efforts are continuing at the scene.
