International Desk: Former President of Pakistan, General (ret.) Pervez Musharraf, died at the age of 79. His family confirmed this information on Sunday (February 5). The former military ruler was undergoing treatment for illness at the American Hospital in Dubai.

The former military ruler was hospitalized for three weeks in June last year. In 2018, the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) announced that he was suffering from the rare disease amyloidosis.

In a statement issued soon after his death, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations Department expressed its condolences.

Amyloidosis is a rare disease that causes an abnormal protein called amyloid to build up in organs and tissues throughout the body. This can make it difficult for organs and tissues to function properly.

Musharraf was born on August 11, 1943, in Delhi, British India. On April 19, 1961, he received his commission from the Pakistan Military Academy, Kakul. This former military ruler also participated in the wars of 1965 and 1971.

He was promoted to general in 1994, and a year later, on October 12, 1999, General (retd) Musharraf seized power in a coup.

Incidentally, on December 17, 2019, a special court in the country sentenced Musharraf to death in a treason case. The former military ruler left the country for Dubai in March 2016 for medical treatment and has not returned to Pakistan since then.
