International Desk: A terrible explosion occurred in a mosque during prayers in Peshawar, Pakistan, yesterday. According to the report by Geo News, the number of dead has increased to 72 after nine more bodies were recovered from the ruins of the mosque on Tuesday. More than 150 were injured.
According to the report, the mosque was full of worshipers at the time of the explosion at 1:30 local time yesterday, that is, during Zohar prayer.
Officials in the country say part of the mosque has been completely destroyed. Quoting security officials, Geo News said that the suicide bomber was in the front row of prayers. He exploded and blew himself up. The country’s police say that the imam of the mosque was also killed in the attack.
Tehreek-e- Taliban Pakistan has already accepted responsibility for the attack. A Pakistani government official said the target of the attack was likely the police because the majority of those killed were members of the force.
Peshawar city police officer Mohammad Ijaz Khan told local media that 300 to 400 policemen were deployed in the area at the time of the blast. Mohammad Asim, spokesman for Peshawar’s Lady Reading Hospital, said many of the injured were in critical condition. He said that an emergency situation has been created.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the incident. In a statement, he said Islam has nothing to do with the people behind this attack. In the statement, Prime Minister Sharif said that the nation is united to face this threat of terrorism.
