International Desk: There have been several clashes over the arrest of Avidio Guzman, the son of Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, who is in prison. 29 people, including 10 army personnel, were killed in this clash between drug dealers and army personnel. Another 35 soldiers were shot dead. The Mexican government made the announcement on Friday (January 6) after a shootout with cartel members. Al-Jazeera is a news channel based in Qatar.
Ovido Guzman was arrested early Thursday in the northern state of Sinaloa. He was later flown to Mexico City on a military plane.
Members of the Sinaloa cartel and their associates joined the fight with security forces following the arrest of Ovidio Guzman. Vehicles were set on fire and rampages erupted after blocking roads across the Pacific coast state.
Mexican security forces arrested Avidio, the 32-year-old son of jailed drug kingpin El Chapo, early Thursday, Defense Minister Luis Crescencio Sandoval said. A few hours of arson and a gunfight with the members of the drug dealer gang took place.
Sandoval also said that Avidio was flown by helicopter from the house where he was arrested to the capital, Mexico City. He was then taken to the maximum security central jail.
El Chapo built a drug empire called the Sinaloa Cartel in the state of Sinaloa. After he was arrested, his sons were in charge of it.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said, “There are no immediate plans to hand over Avidio to the United States.”
He also said, “The documents of the case will be presented in the court. Mexican judges will decide. It’s a process… it’s not just a request. No US forces helped arrest Avidio.
Earlier, Avidio’s father, El Chapo, was serving a sentence in a maximum security prison in the United States. He was extradited to the US in 2017. He was convicted in a New York court.
The neighboring United States has been demanding Avidio’s extradition for years on drug-trafficking charges. The US State Department announced in 2021 that a reward of 50 million dollars will be offered for providing information to bring him under arrest and prosecution.
Abhidi was also arrested once before in 2019. But after his arrest, he was released on the orders of President López Obrador to avoid further casualties when clashes broke out.
