International Desk: The Taliban has banned women from the universities of Afghanistan. The Ministry of Higher Education of the country said that this order will remain in force until further orders.
In light of the country’s cabinet decision, the Ministry of Higher Education ordered all public and private university authorities in Afghanistan to suspend the admission of women on an urgent basis in a letter issued on Tuesday (December 20).
In the letter signed by Higher Education Minister Neda Mohammad Nadeem, it is said that you are informed of the urgent implementation of the said order suspending girls’ education until further notice.
Ministry spokesperson Ziaullah Hashimi, who posted the letter on social media Twitter, confirmed the order to several media outlets including AFP, AP.
UN spokesman Stephen Dujarric called the Taliban’s decision “worrying” on Tuesday.
This is clearly another breach of promise by the Taliban, he told reporters.
This UN official said that since the Taliban took power, women’s place in the public sphere, including education, is getting smaller.
News of the Taliban’s decision to stop women’s higher education came within the meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York. The United States and the United Kingdom condemned it.
US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Robert Wood, said the Taliban cannot expect to be a fair member of the international community unless it respects the human rights and fundamental rights of all Afghans, especially women and girls.
The Taliban said the decision to ban women from higher education institutions was done to maintain “national interest” and “respect”.
